Flora Auroviliana
So many plant names come to the notice of the herbarium that it was decided to arrange them all in a web site and see to what purpose it possibly could be used.
That web site has been entered under the name “Flora Auroviliana”, with the following inventory:
- all the accessions in the herbarium
- all the species belonging to the floristic composition of the TDEF
- the plants, as far as known, growing in Auroville
- donations of other herbaria; The Rapinat Herbarium Tiruchirapalli, The Herbarium of the French Institute Puducherry, The Foundation for the Revatalisation of Local Health Traditions Bengaluru
- donations of students in botany; Madras Christian College Chennai, Kanchi Mamunivar Centre for Post Graduate Studies Puducherry
- all the names mentioned on the seed packets sent by other herbaria and universities through a world-wide seed exchange programme
- and, finally, the plants brought by Aurovilians, or others, on which they would like to have some information
The Auroville Herbarium got listed in the “Index Herbariorum” on 13.04.2010 under the name AURO, and has now just under 15,000 accessions, whereas Flora Auroviliana, as per even date, is handling 960 species.
It has never been the aim of this web site to give a detailed botanical description of the species involved. This information can easily be found in various Floras or the Internet. Instead the idea is to focus on
- the life and works of the authors of the plant names
- the meaning and origin of the family, genus and species names
- the vernacular names, if any
- place of collection when accessed in the herbarium
- uses, properties, toxic aspects
- historical and geographical information on places and people in connection with a given plant
- beliefs and stories
This, of course, is a never ending story
